EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing

EMDR was developed in 1987 by Neuro-Psychologist, Dr Francine Shapeiro. It is is a psychotherapeutic procedure originally designed to treat traumatic or "dysfunctional" memories and experiences and their psychological consequences, previously mainly used in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. However EMDR has been increasingly used over the years to treat a wide range of disorders, too numerous to mention. I and my peers are finding ever increasingly that EMDR is a powerful and beneficial tool, both on its on and alongside Hypnotherapy, for most disorders.

The effectiveness of EMDR is without question, with The UK DOH National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) March 2005 in the Guidelines for the Management of PTSD acknowledging its efficacy in the treatment of PTSD. Independent reviewers for the American Psychological Association (APA) placed EMDR on the list of "Empirically Validated Treatments" for civilian PTSD (Chambless et al 1998). In addition, positive neuroanatomical changes have been shown in the comparison of MRI scans prior to and following EMDR therapy.

In simple terms, EMDR reprocesses information, removes blocks and allows psychological self healing. Therefore positive emotions and higher self regard are experienced, rather than the dysfunction. This is an incredibly powerful and profoundly effective therapy.
